National Research Conference on Youth Development 2026 to Be Held in Sri Lanka
Colombo, Sri Lanka – September 16, 2026
The National Research Conference on Youth Development 2026, jointly organized for the first time by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports of Sri Lanka and the Open University of Sri Lanka, will be held on September 16, 2026, at 9.00 a.m. at the C.E.W.A.S. Centre of Excellence Auditorium for Water and Sanitation in Ratmalana.
The conference will be attended by Hon. Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, Prime Minister of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, as the Chief Guest, together with Senior Professor P.M.C. Thilakaratne, Vice-Chancellor of the Open University of Sri Lanka.
Theme of the Conference
The main theme of this inaugural National Youth Research Conference is:
“Young People as Rights Holders and Change Makers: Asset-Based Pathways for Social Transformation.”
The conference marks an important milestone in Sri Lanka’s efforts to strengthen youth development through research, education, employment opportunities and social transformation.
It is expected to create a valuable platform for researchers, academics, policymakers, youth representatives and other stakeholders to engage in meaningful discussions on the challenges and opportunities facing Sri Lanka’s young people.
As a country in the Asian region with a relatively high level of literacy, Sri Lanka has significant potential to strengthen research-based approaches to youth development. The introduction of a national-level dialogue on emerging trends in research will provide an important opportunity to enhance the research skills and capabilities of young people.
Through such initiatives, Sri Lankan youth can be encouraged to contribute more actively to national and regional development, while creating new pathways for innovation, education, employment and social progress.
The National Research Conference on Youth Development is therefore a valuable and commendable initiative jointly undertaken by the Open University of Sri Lanka and the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
It is also important that this conference continues in the future, with systematic follow-up activities, research studies and evaluations. Such continued engagement will help identify new approaches and practical solutions for strengthening youth development in Sri Lanka.
The inaugural conference is expected to become an important platform for building a stronger research culture among young people and empowering them to become active rights holders, change makers and contributors to sustainable social transformation.
