It is reported that salt production in the Hambantota Maha Lewaya has been completely halted for the past six months.
Authorities say the main reason for this is the continuous rainy weather conditions that have affected the district. The Maha Lewaya, located on the Hambantota-Kataragama main road, which is usually seen with mountains of salt, has now become a wasteland filled with water.
Not a single piece of salt has been produced for six months, and this situation is said to have severely affected the recent salt shortage in the country.
The continuous rainy weather conditions in the Hambantota district have hampered salt production in the Maha Lewaya, says the Chairman of the Lanka Salt Company, Mr. D. Nandana Tilak.
He further emphasized that salt production cannot be done just because the country is surrounded by sea, and that proper weather conditions are essential for that, which directly affects salt production.
ලුණු ගැන ඇහෙන අලුත්ම කතාව
හම්බන්තොට මහ ලේවායේ ලුණු නිෂ්පාදනය පසුගිය මාස හයක පමණ කාලයක් තිස්සේ සම්පූර්ණයෙන්ම ඇනහිට ඇති බව වාර්තා වනවා.
මෙයට ප්රධාන හේතුව දිස්ත්රික්කයට බලපා ඇති අඛණ්ඩ වැසි සහිත කාලගුණික තත්ත්වය බව බලධාරීහු පවසති. සාමාන්යයෙන් ලුණු කඳු ගොඩ ගැසී තිබෙනු දැකගත හැකි හම්බන්තොට – කතරගම ප්රධාන මාර්ගයේ පිහිටි මහ ලේවාය, දැනට ජලයෙන් පිරී ඇති පාළු බිමක් බවට පත්ව තිබේ.
මාස හයක් තිස්සේ එක ලුණු කැටයක්වත් නිෂ්පාදනය කර නොමැති අතර, මෙම තත්ත්වය මෑතකාලීනව රටේ පැවති ලුණු හිඟයටද දැඩි ලෙස බලපා ඇති බව සඳහන් වනවා.
හම්බන්තොට දිස්ත්රික්කයට පවතින අඛණ්ඩ වැසි සහිත කාලගුණ තත්ත්වය මහ ලේවායේ ලුණු නිෂ්පාදනයට බාධා වී ඇති බව ලංකා ලුණු සමාගමේ සභාපති ඩී. නන්දන තිලක් මහතා පවසනවා.
ඔහු වැඩිදුරටත් අවධාරණය කළේ රට වටේ මුහුද තිබූ පමණින් ලුණු නිෂ්පාදනය කළ නොහැකි බවත්, ඒ සඳහා නිසි කාලගුණික තත්ත්වය අත්යවශ්ය බවත්, එය ලුණු නිෂ්පාදනයට සෘජුවම බලපාන බවය.
